Noise Meter: Decibel dB (iOS)
Frequently asked questions
Measurement won't start
Microphone permission is required. Enable it in iOS Settings → Noise Meter → Microphone. The app will not start measuring without it and shows an orange warning on screen.
Are the readings accurate?
They use a fixed reference tuned for the iPhone microphone and may deviate by a few dB by model. The iPhone microphone saturates above roughly 120 dB, and readings beyond that are not reliable. This is not a certified sound level meter.
dB(A) vs dB(Z)?
dB(A) is weighted to human hearing and is the standard used by noise regulations. dB(Z) is the raw, unweighted measurement.
Fast vs Slow?
Time weighting — Fast (125 ms) catches sudden sounds, Slow (1 s) gives a steadier reading. Both are IEC 61672 constants.
